Plug the sink and fill the sink with water to locate the leak in the drain assembly. Adjust a bucket under the drain pipes to collect the water remaining in the pipes when the sink filter is removed. Remove the sliding nut under the filter with an adjustable wrench. Unscrew the rest of the way with your hand and leave the back piece. Loosen the lock nut with a tail wrench made specifically to remove the locknuts.

Scrape the old putty off the drain opening with a spatula. Use a scouring pad soaked with paint thinner to clean the opening out. Construct a thin string of putty and put it on the upper lip of the drain opening. Push the filter into the opening. Climb under the sink and replace the rubber seal ring and the friction and tighten the nut with a wrench until the filter fits snugly. Tighten the sliding nut on the drain tube with an adjustable wrench.
